I’m walking in starlight with a big day ahead tomorrow.
Everyone is walking quietly just now, the slowed walk of those about to turn in for the night.
Humility in Judaism is about knowing who you are and what your space is. We need to know what our space is, where our borders are. We need to let every person have their space.
I heard a rabbi once, unfortunately I do not remember his name, talk about how the Hod of Chesed is most important in our intimate relationships. When is it my partner’s time to take a nap and not me. When is it someone else’s turn to talk. When is it time for me to talk. When do I need to take charge. When do I need to follow. When do I need to say, “You are right,” saying the place you are holding is valid and yours. When do I need to say, “I am right,” saying the place I am holding is valid and mine. In my memory, all of these seeming questions of his were statements. Arrogant love is not love, he said. Humble love is love. Not small love, he held up a finger, humble love. There is a difference, he said. An important difference.
I wish I could remember his name.
I definitely remember his face, and while I can’t say I’d recognize his long black coat or his black hat or the way he walks anywhere, I do recognize him here.
