I wonder if they still dream of water. After 40 days and 40 nights of rain, 150 days of flood before the water receded I think even all these years later I might still dream of water. Water as endless as this desert. On the other hand, walking through day 202, 150 days feels . . . different. Sighing heavily, I notice that Na’amah has linked her arm through Noah’s and she is regaling him with a story. With her free arm she gestures dramatically and when she pauses he chuckles. It’s a very Jewish chuckle and it carries over the din of people walking and chatting. Na’amah's arm drops across Noah’s shoulders and she squeezes him to her. They stumble . . . just a little. Their closeness throws them off balance . . . just a little. It also holds them up. 

Netzach is the quality of endurance, of determination to reach the completion of a goal. Netzach takes responsibility seriously, as Noah and Na’amah took seriously the responsibility of caring for each animal according to their needs on the ark.  

The way their story goes, after God shut them into the ark, every living thing on earth died. All existence on earth was blotted out. Only Noah and those with him on the ark were left. Only them. In a sea of loss and grief and devastation, a world drowning in its own cruelty and horror, how did they keep going in their ark? As big as it was, how small did it feel in the vast sea? How did they hold onto their humanity? How did they muster the love and kindness and care for one another and for all of the beings for whom they were responsible? 

I hear Noah chuckle again and wonder what joke Na’amah is telling. It’s probably about something like food, or family. Wealth and its absence. Health and survival. It might be taking the short if winding path from the rational to the absurd. Maybe she’s being sarcastic. Maybe she is ridiculing self-indulgence. Whatever she is saying, it probably has an edge, with folks who are disadvantaged getting the upper hand. Of course, it could be satire. Whatever it is, I think Noah has heard it before. See how he holds his head and shoulders? Just so. He’s anticipating the words that will come next. I mean, of course he’s heard it before, they’ve been making this annual trek for years. In some ways, they’ve always been making this trek.

Smiling, I turn to you and I . . . I have to ask, have you heard the one about the soup?
